Port Authority Bridges, Tunnels & Rail Advisory: Lane Closings Planned at the George Washington Bridge & Holland Tunnel

Posted February 26, 2021

PATH’s Newport Station Closing Sunday Night for Escalator Installation Work

AirTrain Newark Suspended for Routine Maintenance

Face Coverings Required in All Port Authority Facilities, Including Airports, Midtown Bus Terminal and on AirTrain

As a reminder for any passengers or motorists traveling through Port Authority facilities, some restrictions and service changes remain in place to protect the health and safety of employees and the public. Face coverings are required for anyone using Port Authority facilities, including PATH trains and stations; the World Trade Center transportation hub; the Midtown Bus Terminal and George Washington Bridge Bus Station; the Port Authority’s airports and on AirTrain.

Domestic travelers entering New York or New Jersey from outside the region are asked to fill out a traveler survey, self-quarantine or obtain a COVID-19 diagnostic test, depending on the state and travel circumstances. Updated guidance for travelers is available here for New York and New Jersey. All non-essential travel to and between New York and New Jersey is highly discouraged.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently require a negative COVID-19 test for all travelers entering the U.S. from international destinations. Prior to departure, international travelers must be tested, and in line with the CDC recommendations, should be tested again 3 to 5 days after arrival in the U.S. and plan to self-isolate for 7 days at their destination. Travelers should contact their airline or visit the CDC website for details. Travelers can find COVID-19 information for their destination state, local, territorial, and tribal communities here to make informed decisions, protect themselves, and reduce transmission before, during, and after travel.

George Washington Bridge:

  • A ramp to the northbound Henry Hudson Parkway near the George Washington Bridge will remain closed for repairs to a retaining wall. Eastbound motorists exiting at Riverside Drive or heading to the northbound Henry Hudson Parkway are advised to take the upper level of the bridge. Access to the southbound Henry Hudson Parkway remains unaffected.  Westbound motorists are encouraged to exit at 181st Street off the bridge’s lower level for the Henry Hudson Parkway or Riverside Drive.
  • From 11:59 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, to 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, all eastbound lanes on the bridge’s lower level and two eastbound lanes of the lower level Trans-Manhattan Expressway will be closed.
  • From 11:59 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, to 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, two eastbound toll lanes on the upper level will be closed.
  • From 11:59 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, to 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, two westbound lanes of the lower level Trans-Manhattan Expressway will be closed. Westbound motorists should use the upper level, the exit at 181st Street or the northbound Henry Hudson Parkway ramp to westbound lower level lanes.
  • From 11:59 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, to 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, all westbound lanes to the northbound Palisades Interstate Parkway will be closed.
  • From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, one westbound lane to the northbound Palisades Interstate Parkway will be closed.

Holland Tunnel:

  • Due to ongoing Superstorm Sandy-related repairs, the New York-bound tube of the Holland Tunnel will be closed on Monday, March 1, from 11 p.m. through 5 a.m. the following morning, and on multiple overnights each week through spring 2022. The New Jersey-bound tube remains open at all times during work. For more information on this critical repair project, click here: http://www.panynj.gov/hollandtunnelrepairs
  • A new all-electronic cashless toll system is now activated at the Holland Tunnel. To ensure accuracy of the new system, E-ZPass users must mount their tag prior to entering the toll collection area. For more information, click here.
  • From Sunday, Feb. 28, to Thursday, March 4, from 11:59 p.m. each night through 5:30 a.m. the following morning, one westbound lane will be closed.
  • From 11 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, to 5 a.m. Monday, March 1, one eastbound lane will be closed.
  • From Monday, March 1, through Thursday, March 4, from 11 a.m. each day to 4 a.m. the following morning, multiple lanes will be closed at the intersection of Jersey Avenue and 12th Street, at the base of the ramps from the NJ Turnpike and Route 139 approaching the eastbound Holland Tunnel, for a critical sewer repair being performed by Jersey City.

AirTrain:

  • From 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, to 7 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, AirTrain Newark will be suspended for routine maintenance. Free shuttle buses provide service between Newark Airport Station (Rail Link), terminals A, B, C, and Station P3 and P4 (the parking lot/rental car stations). Amtrak and NJ Transit service will not be affected.

PATH:

  • From 10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, to 5 a.m. Monday, March 1, the Newport Station will be closed for construction work related to the installation of new escalators. Journal Square-33rd Street via Hoboken service will not stop at Newport during this period. For alternate service, NJ Transit’s Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will cross-honor. Free ADA shuttle buses will provide service to Newport, Grove Street, and Exchange Place stations.
  • Customers who use the WTC PATH station during overnights should use the entrances at Fulton Street or Vesey Street via the North Concourse in the 2 World Trade Center Transit Lobby. Oculus access will be limited overnight from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. to allow for enhanced cleaning and the safety and security of customers due to reduced traffic volumes. All other entrances will be closed. For more updates on the WTC campus, click here.
  • As a reminder, the 9 Street and 23 Street stations are closed from 11 p.m. each night to 5 a.m. the following morning for maintenance. Nearby PATH stations at Christopher Street, 14 Street and 33 Street remain open 24 hours a day unless otherwise noted.
