Council Member-at-Large Loyad Booker


Loyad Booker, Jr. is a lifelong resident of Bayonne. Loyad is one of nine children. He attended public school and Our Lady Star of the Sea (St. Mary’s) Grammar School, which is now the location of All Saints Catholic Academy. He graduated from Bayonne High School and then furthered his education by attending Kean College (now called Kean University) and Jersey City State University (now called New Jersey City University).

Loyad served in the United States Army as a Communication Specialist, and was attached to the 82nd Airborne Division.  He was stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Loyad joined the United States Army voluntarily to serve his country.  He is a combat veteran. He was deployed overseas to the Middle East and was part of the operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Southwest Asia Service Medal.

 Loyad was a Bayonne police officer for twenty-five years. He proudly and respectfully served his community with dignity and respect for all. His assignments included Community Oriented Policing, the Patrol Division, and Cops In Schools. He served as a School Resource Officer, working alongside the Juvenile Detective Bureau. Loyad was also a facilitator of the DARE Program and the Crime Prevention Program. He served on the Bayonne High School Board Safety Team and was one of the senior advisers of the Bayonne Police Explorers Program Post 227. He served as the Vice President of the Bayonne Police Athletic League (PAL).

Currently, Loyad works for the Hudson County Public Safety Training Center as the In-Service Training Coordinator.  He also teaches several classes in Methods of Instruction. 

Loyad absolutely, positively loves the The Artist Avenue theater group in Bayonne, and supports The City Kidz theatre group of Jersey City in which several Bayonne children are involved.

As a Council Member, he would like to address quality of life issues and the needs of senior citizens. Loyad supports renovating local parks, so that children and adults will have great places to visit in our neighborhoods. Loyad believes that maintaining public safety and addressing homelessness and mental illness should be top priorities.
