Mayor Robert Kubert
Robert Kubert, a Bayonne native, is a graduate of Horace Mann School and Bayonne High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science/Sociology at Rutgers University-Newark. He completed an Associate of Arts degree in Political Science at Ocean County Community College.
He was appointed to the Bayonne Police Department in 1969 with the rank of Police Officer. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1980, Lieutenant in 1986, Captain in 1994, and Deputy Chief in 1997. After serving as Acting Chief in 2003, he was appointed Chief in 2004.
During his time in the Police Department, Mayor Kubert served as Division Commander of the Detective Bureau, the Patrol Division, and the Community Relations Division. He was the recipient of five Excellent Police Service Awards and three Commendations. After forty-three years as a police officer, he retired as Chief in 2012.
Mayor Jimmy Davis appointed him Public Safety Director in 2014. In that position, he has supervised the Police Department, the Fire Department, and the Parking Utility.
On November 4, 2025, Mayor Davis was elected Hudson County Sheriff. Subsequently, Mayor Davis announced that he would resign as Mayor, in order to begin his term as Sheriff on January 1, 2026.
On December 23, 2025, the Bayonne Municipal Council elected Director Kubert unanimously to serve as Mayor on an interim basis through June 30, 2026. Mayor Kubert will continue to serve as Public Safety Director.
