A system wide boil water advisory has been issued for Bayonne (PWSID NJ0901001), beginning Thursday, January 22, 2026.

Veolia is providing notification that a 30” water main was damaged in South Kearny, which has caused customers within our service area to experience a significant loss of pressure or be without water. A potential or actual threat to the quality of water being provided to you currently exists. As a precaution, we are implementing a system wide Boil Water Advisory until testing of the water supply is deemed satisfactory.

What should I do? What does this mean?

Effective immediately and until further notice, customers within Bayonne are instructed to bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow the tap water to cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking; preparing foods; mixing baby formula, food, juices or drinks; washing vegetables and fruit; cooking; making ice; brushing teeth; and washing dishes until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.

The following measures are also recommended:

• Throw away uncooked food or beverages or ice cubes made with tap water during the day of the advisory;
• Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking;
• Do not swallow water while showering or bathing;
• Rinse hand-washed dishes with a diluted bleach solution (one tablespoon of household bleach per gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle;
• Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms;
• Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries;
• Provide pets with drinking water that has been boiled (and cooled).

This advisory is in effect due to fluctuations of water pressure in the system brought on by emergency repairs. Low water pressure could potentially allow for the presence of harmful microbes in the system. Microbes in drinking water can cause illness and could pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly people, and people with severely compromised immune systems. Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes.

Please continue to boil your water or use bottled water until you are notified that the water quality is satisfactory. This advisory will remain in effect until repairs are completed and testing shows the water quality to be safe.

We will inform residents when the boil water advisory is lifted. We are working as quickly as possible to restore your water quality.

¿Qué debo hacer? ¿Qué significa esto?

A partir de inmediato y hasta nuevo aviso, se instruye a los clientes dentro de Bayonne que hiervan el agua del grifo hasta que hierva a borbotones durante un minuto y permitan que el agua del grifo se enfríe antes de usarla, o usen agua embotellada. Se debe usar agua hervida o embotellada para beber; preparar alimentos; mezclar fórmula para bebés, alimentos, jugos o bebidas; lavar verduras y frutas; cocinar; hacer hielo; cepillarse los dientes; y lavar platos hasta nuevo aviso. El hervir mata las bacterias y otros organismos en el agua.

Se recomiendan las siguientes medidas:

• Deseche los alimentos crudos o bebidas o cubos de hielo hechos con agua del grifo durante el día del aviso;
• Mantenga el agua hervida en el refrigerador para beber;
• No trague agua mientras se ducha o se baña;
• Enjuague los platos lavados a mano con una solución diluida de lejía (una cucharada de lejía doméstica por galón de agua del grifo) o lave sus platos en un lavavajillas utilizando el ciclo de lavado caliente y el ciclo de secado;
• No use dispositivos de filtrado domésticos en lugar de hervir o usar agua embotellada; la mayoría de los filtros de agua domésticos no proporcionarán una protección adecuada contra microorganismos;
• Use solo agua hervida para tratar lesiones menores;
• Proporcione a las mascotas agua para beber que haya sido hervida (y enfriada).

La baja presión del agua podría permitir potencialmente la presencia de microbios nocivos en el sistema.
