Division of Recreation to Open Bayonne's Special Needs Facility, the Field of Dreams at 11th Street Park
Posted April 16, 2025The City of Bayonne and its Division of Recreation are set to open the City’s new 2.4 million Dollar Special Needs Facility (the “Field of Dreams”) on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 11th Street Park.
The Field of Dreams, home of the Division of Recreation’s Special Needs Baseball Program (the “Buddy Baseball League”), was transformed and upgraded by way of a 2.4 million dollar infrastructure investment this past year. The renovations include new dugouts, bleachers, field turf, fencing, two ADA playgrounds, picnic areas, and improved handicap access. Bayonne received funding for the construction from county, state, and federal governments, as well as local developers.
On Saturday, May 3, 2025, the Division of Recreation will begin its 10th Season of Buddy Baseball. The Buddy Baseball League, which began in 2015, is a program for Bayonne’s developmentally and physically challenged youth, helping them enjoy the full benefits of baseball and softball in an athletic environment structured to their specific abilities. Buddy Baseball teaches the players baseball and softball, teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play. It also offers them the chance to socialize while strengthening their self-esteem.
The Field of Dreams will also be the new home of the Division of Recreation’s Special Needs Sports Program and Special Needs Soccer Academy, and the facility will host the Division of Recreation’s Special Needs Sports Summer Camp in July.
The facility will be open for Bayonne residents only and membership will be required.
Membership is limited to special needs individuals and their families ONLY. Anyone of any age who has an IEP, diagnosis by a doctor, or is receiving special needs services is eligible to become a member. Anyone who participates in the Division of Recreation’s Special Needs Sports Program, Special Needs Soccer Academy, and/or Buddy Baseball is eligible.
Membership is FREE and members must be registered with the City of Bayonne. Once they arrive at the facility, Recreation Staff will check-in individuals and their families.
"We are very excited about this new chapter of Special Needs Sports & Recreation.
