Work on GWB Overpasses in Fort Lee, N.J., is Latest Project in Comprehensive $2 Billion
Port Authority Program to Rehabilitate, Repair Nearly Every Component
of George Washington Bridge

Beginning Nov. 3, 2023, the right lane and sidewalk on northbound Lemoine Avenue over the George Washington Bridge approach will be closed to traffic until spring 2024 for rehabilitation. The rehabilitation of the Lemoine Avenue bridge is being done in stages, which will allow two travel lanes of traffic to remain open in each direction throughout construction.

The rehabilitation of the Lemoine Avenue and Center Avenue bridges includes replacing concrete deck, sidewalks, and parapets, pier repairs and the replacement of the topside and underdeck roadway lighting.

Due to expected traffic impacts particularly during peak travel periods, drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes or follow detours listed below. Work on the Lemoine Avenue bridge is scheduled to be completed in 2025 and work will then proceed on the Center Avenue bridge.

Detour Information

  • During the closure, drivers traveling southbound on Lemoine Avenue heading to westbound Bridge Plaza North should proceed south on Lemoine Avenue and make a right onto Bruce Reynolds Boulevard, followed by a right onto Center Avenue and then a right onto Bridge Plaza North eastbound.

  • Drivers traveling southbound on Lemoine Avenue heading to New Jersey Highways 95, 80 and New Jersey Turnpike should turn right on Bridge Plaza North westbound, continue straight to Cross Street, and follow overhead signs to the Fletcher Avenue entrance ramps.

  • Drivers traveling northbound on Lemoine Avenue heading to westbound Bridge Plaza North should turn left on Bruce Reynolds Boulevard, followed by a right onto Center Avenue, followed by a left onto Cross Street/Bridge Plaza North, or turn right on Bridge Plaza North, then right into the west bus slip and up the ramp to Center Avenue.

This project aims to rehabilitate and modernize the two bridges over the approach of the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee. It includes improving turning movements at the entrance to Center Avenue bridge and installing accessible curb cuts along the sidewalks of both bridges.

Upon completion, the Lemoine Avenue bridge will feature new sidewalks, new topside lighting, bus bays, new benches and additional bike racks adjoining bus stops for NJ Transit and Spanish Transportation Corporation jitney services, decorative light posts, and new roadway striping. The Center Avenue bridge will have new sidewalks, new topside lighting, an improved turning radius at the Center Avenue and Bruce Reynolds Boulevard intersection, and new roadway striping.

The overall Restoring the George program comprises a $2 billion investment in 11 projects that will maintain the structural health of the world’s busiest bridge over the next decade for the millions of customers who use it every year. First opened in 1931, the George Washington Bridge remains structurally sound today due to the Port Authority’s commitment to ongoing maintenance and investment in addressing the round-the-clock use of this 92-year-old crossing. Every year, more than 50 million automobiles, buses, and trucks travel eastbound across the bridge.
