Holland Tunnel’s New York-Bound Tube to Close Overnights Beginning Wednesday Evening, Sept. 20, Through Early Saturday Morning, Sept. 23

Closure Required to Test Newly Installed Flood Mitigation and Resiliency Measures

New Jersey-Bound Tube to Remain Open During Overnight Testing

For three upcoming overnights, beginning late night Wednesday, Sept. 20, through the morning of Saturday, Sept. 23, the Holland Tunnel’s New York-bound tube will be closed to traffic to accommodate the testing of newly installed flood mitigation measures. During this testing, the New Jersey-bound tube will remain open.

Following these three overnight closures at the New York-bound tube, regular overnight closures at the New Jersey-bound tube will resume for Superstorm Sandy repairs and flood mitigation work beginning 11 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24.

The New York-bound tube will be closed to traffic as noted in the schedule below:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 20, to Thursday, Sept. 21      11 p.m. – 5 a.m.
  • Thursday, Sept. 21, to Friday, Sept. 22                  11 p.m. – 5 a.m.
  • Friday, Sept. 22, to Saturday, Sept. 23                   11 p.m. – 8 a.m.
  • Saturday, Sept. 23, to Sunday, Sept. 24         No scheduled closures

During testing in the New York-bound tube, drivers are advised to use alternate routes or to use mass transit. More information on the detour map for alternate is available on the project website:

The overnight closures of the New York-bound tube are necessary to test newly installed flood mitigation measures designed to withstand future extreme weather events and meet federal flood standards. More information on this critical repair and resiliency project is available here.

The Port Authority is committed to providing information and updates on this project to affected communities and drivers who use the Holland Tunnel, and will continue to conduct public outreach as the agency has done throughout its work in the tunnel. The Port Authority meets regularly with local communities to ensure that any impact from traffic diversions, construction and noise is carefully monitored, and community concerns are addressed. The Port Authority’s robust community outreach for this critical project includes social media and radio advertisements, email notifications, digital roadside signage and 511, as well as a partnership through Waze to proactively notify drivers who use the Holland Tunnel of upcoming changes.
