Port Authority Bridges, Tunnels & Rail Advisory for December 17 to 22

Lane Closures Planned This Week at the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Goethals Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing

AirTrain Newark to be Suspended Saturday Night to Sunday Morning for Routine Maintenance

Face Coverings Continue to be Required in All Port Authority Facilities Including Airports, Midtown Bus Terminal and AirTrain

For the week of December 17 to 22, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey encourages all travelers who use the agency’s facilities to plan ahead and consider additional travel time due to the lane closures or service changes detailed below. A separate travel advisory for the Christmas and New Year holidays will be issued next week.

LANE CLOSURES IN EFFECT 

George Washington Bridge:

  • From 11 p.m. Friday, December 17, to 9 a.m. Saturday, December 18, three westbound lanes on the upper level will be closed.
  • From 11 p.m. Friday, December 17, to 9 a.m. Saturday, December 18, two westbound lanes on the upper level Trans-Manhattan Expressway will be closed.
  • From 11 p.m. Friday, December 17, to 9 a.m. Saturday, December 18, the 179th Street ramp will be closed. Motorists driving cars may use the Henry Hudson Parkway for access to westbound lanes on the lower level. Trucks must use the eastbound Washington Bridge and exit at University Avenue, turn left and follow signs for the southbound Washington Bridge to westbound lanes on the upper level.
  • From 11 p.m. Friday night, December 17, to 9 a.m. Saturday, December 18, the ramp from the northbound Henry Hudson Parkway to westbound lanes on the upper level will be closed. Motorists should use westbound lanes on the lower level.
  • From 11 p.m. Friday night, December 17, to 9 a.m. Saturday, December 18, westbound lanes on the upper level to the ramp for the northbound Palisades Interstate Parkway will be closed. Motorists should use the lower level.
  • From 11:59 p.m. Friday, December 17, to 8 a.m. Saturday, December 18, all eastbound lanes on the lower level will be closed. Motorists will be diverted to the upper level.
  • From 11:59 p.m. Friday, December 17, to 8 a.m. Saturday, December 18, the ramp from the northbound Henry Hudson Parkway to the eastbound lanes on the lower level Trans-Manhattan Expressway will be closed. Motorists will be diverted to Trans-Manhattan Expressway and then Amsterdam Avenue to 178th Street.
  • From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 18, one lane of the Henry Hudson Parkway northbound ramp to westbound lanes on the upper level will be closed.
  • From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 18, one westbound lane on the upper level to the northbound Palisades Interstate Parkway will be closed.
  • From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 18, one westbound lane on the upper level will be closed.
  • From 11 p.m. Saturday, December 18, to 9 a.m. Sunday, December 19, three westbound lanes on the upper level will be closed.
  • From 11 p.m. Saturday, December 18, to 9 a.m. Sunday, December 19, two westbound lanes on the upper level Trans-Manhattan Expressway will be closed.
  • From 11 p.m. Saturday, December 18, to 9 a.m. Sunday, December 19, the 179th Street ramp will be closed.   • From 11:59 p.m. Saturday, December 18, to 8 a.m. Sunday, December 19, the ramp from eastbound lanes on the upper level to the southbound Palisades Interstate Parkway will be closed. Motorists should use the lower level.

Holland Tunnel:

  • From 11 p.m. Friday, December 17, to 7 a.m. Saturday, December 18, the New York-bound tube of the Holland Tunnel will be closed due to ongoing Superstorm Sandy-related repairs. The New Jersey-bound tube remains open at all times during work. For more information on this critical repair project, click here.
  • From 11 p.m. Sunday, December 19, to 5 a.m. Monday, December 20, one eastbound lane will be closed.
  • From Sunday, December 19, through Wednesday, December 22, from 11:59 p.m. each night through 5:30 a.m. the following morning, one westbound lane will be closed.
  • On Monday, December 20, and again on Tuesday, December 21, from 11 p.m. each night through 5 a.m. the following morning, the New York-bound tube of the Holland Tunnel will be closed due to ongoing Superstorm Sandy-related repairs. The New Jersey-bound tube remains open at all times during work. For more information on this critical repair project, click here.

Goethals Bridge:

  • From 10 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, to 5 a.m. Thursday, December 23, one eastbound lane will be closed.

Outerbridge Crossing:

  • From 11 p.m. Monday, December 20, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, December 21, one westbound lane will be closed.

AIRPORTS & AIRTRAIN

  • From 9:30 p.m. Saturday, December 18, to 7 a.m. Sunday, December 19, AirTrain Newark will be suspended due to routine maintenance. Free shuttle buses provide alternate service between Newark Airport Station (Rail Link), airport terminals A, B, C, and stations P3 and P4 (the parking lot/rental car stations). Amtrak and NJ Transit service will not be affected.

PATH 

  • The southwest entrance to the PATH Harrison station is closed at all hours to accommodate demolition work ahead of a renovation of the station. During construction, riders are required to use traffic signal pedestrian crossings at Angelo Cifelli Drive and Guyon Drive to access a corresponding station house on the opposite side of Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard.  
  • Customers who use the WTC PATH station during overnights should use the street level entrances at Fulton Street or Vesey Street via the North Concourse in the 2 World Trade Center Transit Lobby. Oculus access is limited overnight from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. to allow for enhanced cleaning and the safety and security of customers due to reduced traffic volumes. All other entrances will be closed.   • As a reminder, the 9 Street and 23 Street stations are closed from each midnight to 5 a.m. for maintenance. Nearby PATH stations at Christopher Street, 14 Street and 33 Street remain open 24 hours a day unless otherwise noted.

COVID-19 TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS

  • As a reminder for any passengers or motorists traveling through Port Authority facilities, some restrictions and service changes remain in place to protect the health and safety of employees and the public. Face coverings continue to be required for anyone using Port Authority facilities, including PATH trains and indoor PATH stations; the World Trade Center transportation hub; the Midtown Bus Terminal and George Washington Bridge Bus Station; the Port Authority’s airports and on both AirTrain JFK and AirTrain Newark.
  • In accordance with updated U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, masks are not required while waiting for trains on outdoor platforms at the following PATH stations only: Newark Penn, Harrison and Journal Square. Masks must continue to be worn at all other stations and while on PATH trains.
  • Domestic travelers entering New York or New Jersey should follow CDC guidance here.
  • International air travelers entering the United States through New York or New Jersey should follow CDC guidance here.
