Report of Death of Police Officer Thomas Hunter
December 17,1920 7:25 P.M.
At the above time while responding to Cottage
Street and Hobart Avenue to transport a prisoner
to headquarters, a police auto patrol collided
with another vehicle at 26th Street and Broadway.
The police vehicle was driven by Officer Frederick
Whitney. Officer Thomas Hunter, who was sitting in
the rear of the police vehicle, was thrown from
the vehicle into the street. He sustained a
fractured skull. He was removed to the Bayonne
hospital where he died at 8:37 P.M. as a result of
the injuries that he had received in the accident.
Report of Death of Police Officer Hugh O'Donnell
July 20, 1926 2:40 P.M.
Patrolman William Smeaton reports that he observed
Officer Hugh O'Donnell mount a police horse at
22nd Street and Avenue "F". The horse then broke
into a fast gallop north on Avenue "F". Officer
Smeaton got into a passing auto and followed after
O'Donnell. When he got to 27th Street and Avenue
"F" he found Officer O'Donnell lying on the ground
near a rock pile seriously injured. He had been
apparently thrown from the horse. Officer Smeaton
put O'Donnell in the car and took him to the
Bayonne hospital. Officer O'Donnell died on July
24, 1926 at 3:40 P.M. as a result of the injuries
that he received when he was thrown from the
police horse at 27th Street and Avenue "F".
Report of Death of Police Officer Stanley
Zendarski
July 4, 1930 1:42 P.M.
Patrolman Edward Hanak reports that while
standing on the southwest corner of 22nd Street
and Prospect Avenue with Patrolman Stanley
Zendarski that Joseph Rusnak came from the
eastside of Prospect Avenue towards them and
started shooting directly at Officer Zendarski and
myself. I then saw Zendarski fall to the ground
and I was shot in the right ankle. Rusnak then
fled on foot. I stopped an auto and gave chase
but could not find the suspect. I was taken to the
Bayonne hospital. I saw Officer Zendarski there.
Doctor Geller pronounced him dead at 1:51 A.M.
Lt. William Barry reports he learned later that
Officer Zendarski was removed from 22nd Street at
about 1:40 A.M. by a private automobile. He had
been shot in the stomach. Patrolman Hanak who was
also shot in the ankle was detained at the
hospital. Joseph Rusnak was arrested at 2:45 A.M.
this date at his home, 207 Avenue "F", Bayonne by
Acting Chief Daniel Kilduff, Lt. William Barry,
Sgt. Michael McGeehan, Det. Neil Ward, Ptlm.
Dennis Sweeney and Ptlm. Frank Hass.
Report of Death of Police Officer Joseph Brameyer
June 21, 1970 12:20 P.M.
At the above time while responding to a report of
a burglary in progress Officer Brameyer became
involved in an accident at 22nd Street and Avenue
"J". His police vehicle was found imbedded on the
gate post made of steel on the fence surrounding a
vacant lot. Officer Brameyer was unconscious and
trapped inside the car. He was removed from the
vehicle and transported to the Bayonne hospital.
At 5:20 P.M. Officer Brameyer expired as a result
of the injuries sustained in the auto accident.
Report of Shooting of Police Officer Roy Williams
June 10, 1961 12:20 A.M.
On the above time and date, the police were
dispatched to a tavern at 424 Broadway. Upon
arrival they were informed by off-duty Patrolman
Roy Williams that he was in the tavern and noticed
a man with a gun. While questioning the man he
suddenly whipped out the gun. Williams grabbed
the gun and it went off striking him in the left
leg. The assailant then ran out of the tavern.
Suddenly he burst back in the tavern again and
fired several more shots striking two patrons, one
in the stomach and the other in the arm and leg.
He then fled on foot east on 19th Street. A
search was instituted by responding police
personnel. Officer Dick Baccarella entered
another tavern where the suspect was seen
entering. He searched the tavern and arrested the
perpetrator at gunpoint hiding in the men's room.
The suspect, Nicholas DiPrima was subsequently
charged with shooting the off-duty police officer
as well as the two innocent bystanders.
Report of Shooting of Police Officer John Kelly,
Richard Silvay and James Sisk
September 21, 1968 12:34 A.M.
On the above time and date, the police were
dispatched to May's Tavern, 577 Kennedy Boulevard
to investigate two suspicious men. Upon arriving
at 23rd Street, they heard a series of shots being
fired between Avenue "C" and the Boulevard. As
they proceeded east on twenty third street they
saw two police officers fall to the ground. Ptlm.
Richard Silvay fell in the street and Ptlm. John
Kelly fell on the sidewalk. A vehicle sped away
and the police pursed it. During the chase
numerous shots were fired by the suspects as well
as the police. The occupants eventually abandoned
the vehicle in Jersey City and fled on foot.
During the ensuing footchase several more shots
were fired and Ptlm. James Sisk was wounded. One
suspect was apprehended at the scene. An extensive
follow-up investigation led to the capture of all
the suspects and identified Dennis Darby of Jersey
City as the one who shot the officers. Ptlm. John
Kelly was shot twice in the neck. Ptlm. Richard
Silvay was shot in the left arm and leg. Ptlm.
James Sisk was shot in the back. Officers Robert
Carter, Edward Mikulski, Edward Rossiter and
Joseph Wolleon were credited with the eventual
capture of the wanted felons in this incident.
Report of Shooting of Police Officer Alfred
Wielongowski
February 12, 1979 5:31 P.M.
On the above time and date, Officer Al
Wielongowski was dispatched to 454 Broadway on a
report of an assault in progress. Upon arrival he
chased a fleeing suspect to 20th Street west of
Broadway. When he caught up to the man the
suspect turned and fired three shots point blank
right into the abdomen of the police officer. The
officer fell back and returned several shots but
the suspect fled on foot. Arriving police
personnel removed the officer to the hospital.
The shooter was identified as John Jaroszewski, a
resident of the area. An extensive search was
instituted but the suspect vanished. Several days
later he was apprehended by Port Authority Police
in New York City still carrying the gun that he
had shot the officer with. He was subsequently
charged with the shooting of the police officer.
After about a year of extensive medical treatment
Officer Wielongowski recovered from his wounds but
had to retire from the police department due to
the seriousness of his injuries.
Report of Shooting of Police Officer Mark Adamson
January 24, 1984 9:30 A.M.
On the above time and date, while on routine
patrol, Detectives Mark Adamson and Antonio
Nardini entered the parking lot of the city-line
shopping plaza on Kennedy Boulevard and west 63rd
Street. As Detective Adamson stepped out of the
unmarked police vehicle he was struck in the chest
by a bullet fired from a weapon from the window of
an apartment in the Curries Woods housing
project. Fortunately for the Officer the bullet
struck the bullet proof vest that he was wearing.
He was treated at the Bayonne hospital for a chest
bruise and released. The bullet was recovered
inside the vest. A follow up investigation showed
that two shots were fired from a fourth floor
window by a sixteen year old juvenile using a 22
caliber weapon. He was subsequently arrested and
charged accordingly.
Report of Shooting of Police Sergeant Mark Smith
March 30, 1999 4:36 P.M.
On the above time and date, Detective Sergeant
Mark Smith responded to a call of a fight in the
hallway at 409 Avenue C. While attempting to
separate two female combatants in the narrow
passageway, persons unknown removed his 9mm
service weapon from its side holster. The gun
fired striking the Officer in his lower abdomen.
There were several other individuals in the
confines of the hallway at the time. After
emergency surgery at the Bayonne hospital, the
Sergeant was in stabile condition and eventually
made a full recovery.
