Mark Smith was born in Bayonne, New Jersey as the fourth son of a police officer and nurse. He learned early the value of family, friendship, and service to the community. Mark and his brothers grew up on West 26th Street and attended St. Henry’s Grammar School and Marist High School, where he was elected Class President.
In 1983, Mayor Smith began his service to our community as a member of the Bayonne Police Department. During his twenty-five years of service, he rose through the ranks of the BPD from Patrolman to Deputy Chief. He received a number of awards, citations, and honors for his valor and bravery in the line of duty. While serving on the police force, Mayor Smith completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Peter’s College in Marketing and Management. He went on to attend Seton Hall University where he graduated with a Masters Degree in Human Resources and Development.
On November 4th, 2008, Mark was elected as Mayor of Bayonne.
Mark is an active member of numerous law enforcement and community organizations where he works to make Bayonne a better place to live, work, and play. He is an active parishioner of Saint Henry’s R.C. Church where he volunteers to teach catechism to young children.
Mark Smith is happily married to his wife Patricia. They reside in Bayonne with their two daughters.
Mayor Smith’s current term is July 1, 2010- June 30, 2014.
