The most frequently asked questions to the Historical Society are those regarding tracing one's family history for relatives who have lived in Bayonne. The following information may assist Bayonne residents and former Bayonne residents locate information to document their family histories at the following locations. Documents
and Records Copies of birth and death certificates for people who were born or died in Bayonne are available at the city's Health Department. Birth certificates are available for Bayonne births beginning in 1920 to the present, and death certificates are available for Bayonne deaths from 1968 to the present. Certified, sealed copies of each certificate are $5.00. For marriage records dating back to 1910, one may apply to the City Clerk's office. Records for earlier periods are available from the State of New Jersey. Birth, death and marriage certificates may also be obtained by writing to the Registrar of Vital Statistics, New Jersey State Department of Health, CN-370, 185 West State Street, Trenton, NJ, 08625-0370. There is a fee, payable to the Registrar. For information call (609) 292-6265. The New Jersey State Archives owns New Jersey wills from 1670 through 1952. They may be searched in person in Trenton, 225 West State Street, or through the mail for $5.00 per will packet (up to ten pages). Resources
