The Bayonne Historical
Society was organized by volunteer residents in 1991 and incorporated
as a 501(c)3 organization by the State of New Jersey in 1992. Accomplishments
of the society include the following:
1. sponsored the David
Horsley Silent Film project - brought several early Horsley silent films
and a loop of Edison film of the Standard Oil fire (1900) to Bayonne and
produced a large plaque commemorating the Centaur/Nestor independent film
studio at 900 Broadway
2. presented a "Movie and Memories Night" for the senior citizen
residents at Back Bay Gardens
3. assembled over thirty John A. Noble lithographs for a posthumous exhibition
of the artist's work in the Bayonne Public Library
4. joined the Save Outdoor Sculpture!SOS and SOS!TLC Smithsonian projects
to restore: The Hiker and The GAR Monument at Hudson County Park; and
to clean: Madame Curie and Columbus at the Bayonne Library, Family at
the Jewish Community Center, and Policeman and Fireman at the Bayonne
Municipal Building
5. restored the 1904 antique circulation desk of the Bayonne Public Library
6. restored the Grandfather's clock donated by jeweler Samuel Cooper to
the Bayonne Public Library lobby
7. saved part of the wooden balustrade from the municipal court room in
the old Police Station on Avenue C at 26th Street
8. saved a fare box from the old #10 Drogin Bus Company
9. restored three firemanic paintings in the collection of the Bayonne
Fire Museum
10. provided photographs for the restoration of The Bandstand/Gazebo in
Stephen R. Gregg Bayonne Hudson County Park
11. assisted with the production of two Images of America books: Bayonne
and Bayonne Passages
12. produced a list of local landmarks that is used by the Bayonne Historic
Preservation Commission
13. produced a Landmarks Booklet for the community in 1998
14. developed the text for several street signs to commemorate local landmarks
15. contributed financially to the Bayonne Public Library Anniversary
events
16. contributed financially to the Bayonne Community Museum fundraising
17. collected genealogical information about founding families and mayors
of Bayonne
18. designed, produced, and installed a permanent exhibit in the City
Council chamber of matted, framed photographs of all the mayors and council
presidents of Bayonne
19. sponsored trustee Carmela Karnoutsos, Ph.D., in writing two scholarly
papers about Bayonne's first Mayor Henry Meigs, Jr., and the Constable
Hook Cemetery
20. sponsored treasurer Michael Kostelnik in writing a scholarly paper
about local Revolutionary War events
21. sponsored the cleaning of the bronze plaque at Mercer Park in honor
of Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer
22. assembled a large and ever growing collection of memorabilia relating
to the history and residents of the City of Bayonne
23. mounted three summer exhibits at Liberty State Park of local history
about: the ELCO PT Boats, residents during World War II, and local landmarks
24. participated in ten Bayonne Annual Hometown Fairs
25. coordinated the manufacturing and installation of a small bronze plaque
to mark the first City Hall building at the site of the present Bergoff
Building on Broadway at 22nd Street to open one of the Hometown Fairs
26. developed and maintain a Web site about the society and its events
for the community
27. present programs for nine months each year on historic topics for
the community such as family genealogy, local landmarks preservation,
local, state, and federal history
28. sponsor one-day bus tours to historic sites such as: Waterloo Village,
Snug Harbor, the Roosevelt homes in Hyde Park, the Mark Twain House in
Hartford, the Lakehurst Dirigible Museum, the New Jersey State House in
Trenton, and the Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary in Philadelphia
29. produce an ongoing Holiday Ornament series since 2002
30. produced
