Anthony Chiappone
Council Member At-Large
Born November 13, 1957, in Brooklyn,
New York, of Italian and Spanish descent, Council
Member At-Large Anthony Chiappone, moved to Bayonne
with his father Peter Chiappone in 1970. "Tony" as
he is known, is a graduate of Number 12 School (now
Bailey School), Bayonne High School, and attended
York College in New York and Jersey City State
College, where he majored in media arts.
In 1978, while studying photography
and shooting freelance weddings for numerous
photography studios, Chiappone took a position with
Best Foods, CPC, in Bayonne, where he worked for
nine years before leaving to start his own full-time
photography business, Kristen Studios.
In 1994, Chiappone began producing a
local community program called "Bayonne Sunnyside
Up," which
focuses on the upbeat community events that take
place in Bayonne. It airs on Cablevision's public
access channel.
In response to citizen requests,
Chiappone also created the community action program,
"Bayonne Public Forum." Through this venue, he
televised meetings of the Bayonne Municipal Council,
Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders, local
school board meetings and Bayonne Zoning & Planning
Board meetings. It was through this civic
participation that Chiappone became involved in
local government and politics.
Chiappone has served on the Bayonne
City Council having first been elected to the
position of First Ward Council Member in 1998.
Running once again as an Independent in 2002,
Chiappone is now in his second term serving as
Council Member At-Large.
Chiappone is a board member of the
Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation, Bayonne
Board of School Estimate, Bayonne Economic
Development Corporation, Bayonne UEZ and is Chairman
of the city's Cable TV Committee. Chiappone is also
a member of the Hudson County Animal League.
Chiappone is the Standard Bearer of
the Bayonne Civic Association which sponsors two
annual fundraising benefit events; "Bayonne Day in
the Park" and the "Annual Bayonne Bridge Benefit
Run." In addition, Chiappone has organized and
sponsored numerous community Holiday Parties, the
Annual "Kite's Over Bayonne Day", the "WTC Memorial
Tribute Ceremony", "Dedication of Dog Park to
Sirius" (PA bomb detecting dog lost in WTC), and
most recently, "Proud of Our Troops Tribute
Ceremony".
Chiappone and his wife Diane, the
former Diane Will of Manhattan, NYC, have three
children: Kristen, Kurtis, and Keith and have two
pet Shihtsu's; Kuddles and Katie.
Elected to the 31st District State
Assembly in November, Chiappone will continue to
serve in his capacity of Councilman At-Large, but
has made the decision to serve as a full-time
Assembly legislator for Bayonne and the 31st
District by closing down his business of 20 years to
do so.
