Generally, the duties and responsibilities include
but are not limited to the following:
- Approve contracts
- Approve grant applications
- Approve City’s Master Plan and Zoning
regulations
- Approve redevelopment plans/blight
declarations
- Approve/amend salaries and wages for all City
Employees
- Approve/amend Classifications Schedule for all
City employees titles
- Approve fee schedules for various functions;
e.g. building permit fees, fees for business
licenses, sit plan applications, etc.
- Authorize settlement of litigation
- Approve street vacations
- Approve sale/lease and purchases of City-owned
property
- Approve changes to the Administrative code
- Approve certain personnel appointments; e.g.
department directors, special officers, City
Clerk/Deputy Clerk, etc.
- Resolve appeals from various boards (Planning,
Zoning, etc.)
- Consent to Mayor’s appointment of various
Boards, Authorities, Advisory Committees
- Approve regulations concerning business
licenses, streets and sidewalks, public
right-of-ways, rent control, etc.
- Create legislation.
Municipal Council Meetings are generally held twice a
month on Wednesdays. Its meetings are open to the

Municipal Council Meetings, as well as other City
meetings which take place in the Council Chamber,
can be viewed live on the Bayonne's Government
Access channel 78, Bay-TV, on Cablevision's
Optimum service. Meetings are rebroadcast for the
benefit of those who miss the live meetings. For
Cablevision customers who do not have Optimum, taped
City Hall meetings can be viewed on Sundays, on
channel 33, between 7AM and 7PM.
For those who do not have cable, tapes of Council
meetings are now available at the
Bayonne
Public Library and can be borrowed for home
viewing.
