Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that the Bayonne Free Public Library will host a science story show to mark the end of the summer season. On Tuesday, August 27, at 11:00 a.m., Piccirillo Sciencetelling will perform a program called “Bugs of Blackwood” in the O’Connor Gallery on the second floor of the library. The program is open to all Bayonne children.
“Bugs of Blackwood” tells the story of Benjamin, who has a good life living on Blackwood Avenue. Most of his neighbors are friendly. He has a big family that is always there to help him. However, all of this is about to change when Benjamin has an accident. Benjamin is a bug, and now he must be rescued. By using experiments with fire, gas, air pressure, and water, see if Benjamin’s friends can save him before all hope is squashed.
Piccirillo Sciencetelling is a New Jersey-based organization offering interactive programs that use science experiments to tell stories. Through a combination of science and storytelling, Piccirillo Sciencetelling engages, educates, and entertains the audience.
The library is located at 31st Street and Avenue C.

BCB Community Bank to Sponsor 4 mile Run/2 mile Walk Across Bayonne Bridge to Benefit Injured Veterans

BCB Community Bank will be sponsoring the BCB 4 Mile Bayonne Bridge Run & 2 Mile Walk on Sunday, September 29, with a start time of 8:30a.m., (rain or shine).

Registration will take place in Bayonne from 6:30 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. Participants are encouraged to arrive early, (7:30 a.m.). Staten Island participants should cross into Bayonne no later than 7:30 a.m., before the Bridge is closed to vehicular traffic.

On Sunday, September 29th BCB Community Bank, working in cooperation with the City of Bayonne and the Port Authority of NY & NJ Bridge management divisions, will be closing the Bayonne Bridge roadway from 8:00am till 10:00am in both directions. Runners and walkers will start near the foot of the Bridge in Bayonne and cross over to Staten Island. They will then turn around and complete the race in Bayonne.

This will be the last time anyone on foot will be able to cross the original Bayonne Bridge before renovations begin to raise the roadbed an additional 64 feet to accommodate super tankers and cargo ships destined for Port Newark. The Bridge’s walkways have already been closed to pedestrian traffic.

Following the race, a victory party for runners, walkers and supporters will be hosted till 1:00pm. Participants will be treated to food, music, snacks, soft drinks and beer. Post race awards will be distributed to winners in a variety of categories as well as a participation award and tee shirt for everyone entered in the run or walk.

Two veterans groups, the Independence Fund and the Hope for the Warriors Foundation will be the primary recipients of all the race proceeds.

The Independence Fund is a program that provides tools, therapies and guidance to veterans severely injured in the Line of Duty who are otherwise not receiving them.

Hope for the Warriors is designed to enhance the quality of life for post 9/11 service members, their families and the families of the fallen who have sustained physical and psychological wounds in the Line of Duty. Hope for the Warriors is dedicated to restoring a sense of self, restoring the family unit and restoring hope for our service members and our military families.

One of the primary goals of the race will be to raise enough money to purchase several all-terrain wheelchairs for disabled veterans (see photo below). These motorized chairs can be taken off road and into areas where traditional wheelchairs were not designed to go. They will provide the injured vets more maneuverability than they have ever had since sustaining their injuries.

BCB Community Bank employees and their families will be volunteering to act as race marshals, water station managers, parking directors, cleanup crews and more. It will also be an opportunity for employees’ children to serve as volunteers and fulfill their community service hours.

For more information on the Bayonne Bridge Run or to register on line, runners and walkers can go to PracticeHard.com or call 908-245-3000 and mention Bayonne Bridge Run.
