September 11…Bayonne Remembers Holds its Annual

Interfaith Memorial Service and Candlelight Vigil

The September 11…Bayonne Remembers Committee has announced that plans are being finalized for the annual Interfaith Memorial Service and Candlelight Vigil honoring the victims of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and United Air Lines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001.  The service will also honor the victims of the attack on the World Trade Center on February 26, 1993. This year’s event will take place on Thursday, September 11, 2014, at the 9-11 Memorial in Harbor View Park, at the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor (the former Military Ocean Terminal), and will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Several members of the Bayonne Interfaith Clergy will offer prayers, readings, and reflections. The program will include a bagpiper, a trumpeter, color guards from the Bayonne Police and Fire Departments, the veterans’ color guards from Bayonne, and the Bayonne High School Marching Band. Mayor Jimmy Davis will offer brief remarks. Soloist Jose Candelaria will sing “America the Beautiful.” The Bayonne Honor Choir will offer other songs.  Taps will be played at the end of the program.

For members of the public who wish to attend the September 11 program, there will be cross-town shuttle buses that will pick up passengers at West 23rd Street and Del Monte Drive (the location of Catholic War Veterans Post #1612), beginning at 5:30 p.m.  This year, there will be additional short-distance shuttles available to carry passengers from the Peninsula parking area to the memorial. At the conclusion of the program, the short-distance shuttle buses will transport passengers back to the Peninsula parking area.  The cross-town shuttles will carry passengers back to West 23rd Street.

For motorists who would like to use the cross-town shuttle, there are parking lots with metered spaces in the vicinity of West 23rd Street and Del Monte Drive.  There are also on-street metered parking spaces near the Parking Utility lots.

Participants who wish to drive directly to the ceremony can park in designated spaces at the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor.  There are also some parking spaces located next to Harbor View Park.

The September 11…Bayonne Remembers Committee was formed immediately following the terrorist attacks in 2001, and a memorial service has been held each year since.  World-renowned artist-sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, a resident of Russia and a native of the Republic of Georgia, designed the memorial, “To the Struggle Against World Terrorism,” which he donated as a gift from the Russian Federation to the United States of America. The monument was placed in Harbor View Park in Bayonne, where it rises up across the harbor from where the two World Trade Center towers stood.  In 2006, the memorial was dedicated.  It bears the names of all of the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The committee members felt they wanted something special to memorialize the residents of Bayonne who perished in the terrorist attacks.  In 2007, the committee dedicated separate monuments for each of Bayonne’s victims, one who died in the World Trade Center in 1993, two who died on United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania in 2001, and ten who died in the World Trade Center in 2001.  In 2011, the committee dedicated the Twin Towers Steel Monument.

Everyone is invited to participate in the Interfaith Memorial Service and Candlelight Vigil, which will take place rain or shine.  Any questions about this event can be directed to Frank Perrucci at 201-858-1623, or Dolores Kelly at 201-823-4890.
