The Bayonne Public Library is a magnificent building built in the Beaux-Art and Classical Revival styles complete
with Ionic and Doric columns, and richly ornamented architectural details. The Bayonne Public Library, incorporated
in 1890, moved into the present Carnegie-funded building at 697 Avenue C in 1904.
In 1903, Andrew Carnegie donated $50,000 for construction of this library. In 1913, Mr. Carnegie gave another
$30,000 for its expansion. In 1930 the library needed further expansion, and with a total cost of $300,000, the
expansion was completed.
On Memorial Day in 1959, the library was gutted by fire, and the central part of the interior and roof were badly
burnt. The Bayonne Public Library was restored at a cost of $1.25 million and opened its doors again to the public in 1963.
In 1989 it was officially rededicated as The Free Public Library & Cultural Center of Bayonne. The Mary O'Connor
Gallery of the library presents performing and visual arts and interactive events to its community. Various meetings
and cultural programs are held in the basement of the library building.
