Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that Bayonne Head Start was recognized recently at the regional Head Start Conference for its role in promoting the Affordable Care Act (ACA) through outreach and enrollment activities during the historic initial ACA Open Enrollment Period. Mayor Smith said, “I would like to congratulate Bayonne Head Start for the great job it did in informing Bayonne residents about obtaining health insurance for their families.” Locally, Head Start, a pre-Kindergarten program, is a project of the Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation (BEOF). Bayonne Head Start received the award from Joyce A. Thomas, Regional Administrator for U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The ACA offered millions of Americans the opportunity to sign up for private health insurance or to apply for Medicaid, if qualified, in participating states.
Only two Head Start programs in Region Two (New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands) received this award. Bayonne Head Start was one award winner. The other award-winning agency was Leaguers in Newark. BEOF Executive Director Ana Quintela said that special thanks should be given to Rosemary Simnowitz, the Head Start Program Director, for her hard work.
