Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that there will be a community blood drive on Monday, April 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the City Hall Fire House, at 27th Street and Avenue C. The drive is sponsored by the Bayonne Fire Department, and is taking place to respond to the critically low blood supply. Area blood banks are short of all blood types, so all types are welcome in this drive. The Blood Center of New Jersey reminds Bayonne residents that someone needs blood every two seconds.
Health officials are asking prospective first-time donors to bring signed or photo identification and to know their Social Security numbers. All repeat blood donors must provide signed identification. Any adult who is physically able is welcome to donate blood. Prospective donors who are 16 or 17 years old may donate blood, if they can produce completed parental consent forms that are available from the Blood Center of New Jersey. In order to prevent donors from being weak after giving blood, drive organizers are asking donors to eat a meal and drink plenty of water one hour beforehand. Water will be available at the drive site. Health professionals will screen prospective donors before blood is drawn. There will be a free cholesterol check for all blood donors.
For those who have traveled recently outside the United States, and for those with any other eligibility questions, please call the Blood Center of New Jersey at 973-676-4700, extension 132 or extension 198, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
