Winter Weather Advisory from Mayor Mark A. Smith

Mayor Smith issued the following advisory on Monday, January 6, 2014:

The National Weather Service is forecasting extremely cold temperatures and high winds starting tonight and into tomorrow evening. Wind chill factors will be below zero for most of this time.

Please be prepared and take precautions to protect your property from freezing. Make sure that spaces with water pipes are heated.

Please avoid prolonged exposure to high wind and low temperatures. Especially avoid exposing bare skin outdoors.

Do not allow pets to linger outdoors.

Watch out for icing conditions on roads and sidewalks.

Landlords are required to provide heat and hot water during the winter. If you have no heat or hot water, please call 201-858-6900.

The City has established an emergency shelter to provide refuge from the extreme cold. The Firehouse Recreation Center at 597 Broadway will remain open through Tuesday evening to provide a place with heat. You can take advantage of this facility on a walk-in basis or call the Bayonne Police Department at 201-858-6900 for transportation to the center.

Please look in on elderly and disabled neighbors and relatives. For non-emergency assistance, please call the Bayonne Police Department at 201-858-6900. And for emergencies, as always, please call 9-1-1.

Stay home, be prepared, and be safe.
