Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that the Bayonne Police Department has issued safety tips for the holiday season. Mayor Smith said, “The City of Bayonne would like everyone to enjoy the holiday season. I urge all residents to follow the Police Department’s tips and to stay safe.”
Police Chief Ralph Scianni reminded shoppers to lock their cars during and after their shopping trips. He cautioned against leaving presents in cars, in order to reduce crimes of opportunity. If it is not possible to remove presents from cars, Scianni urged shoppers to lock them in the trunk. Scianni advised shoppers to remove keys from their cars, and not to leave spare sets of car keys in their vehicles. He urged all motorists to lock their cars overnight and whenever their vehicles are unattended.
Police officers have observed that many shoppers and delivery people leave their vehicles unlocked, with engines running, while they run into stores. Scianni reminded motorists that this practice is a violation of state law. For safety’s sake, he urged motorists to turn off their engines, to lock their vehicles, and to take their keys with them, even during brief errands.
Public Safety Director Jason O’Donnell concluded, “I would like to urge all residents to use common sense with your vehicles and personal belongings during the holiday season and always. Taking an extra moment to play it safe will make for happier holidays.”
