Kill Van Kull Blasting Advisory – Update

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock, the Army Corps of Engineers’ contractor, will continue the current phase of blasting in the Kill Van Kull on and off for at least another three weeks. There may be additional blasting in the future. The contractor is unable to provide more exact information about the duration of blasting at this time. The timing and length of the blasting will depend on conditions in the rock formations under the Kill Van Kull.
This work is part of the ongoing harbor-deepening project. As a general policy, when blasting takes place, it will not happen before 9:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. There will be no blasting on Sundays or federal holidays.
The federal government’s contractors are doing other channel-deepening work in addition to blasting. The other tasks include dredging and drilling, which take place continuously. The federal government places no time restrictions on dredging and drilling, which can take place around the clock seven days a week.
Anyone with questions or concerns about blasting, drilling, or dredging should call the contractor’s complaint hotline at 201-339-6470.
