The Bayonne Tax Collector’s Office announced that third quarter property tax payments are due on Wednesday, August 24. The nominal legal due date for the tax bills was Monday, August 1. However, the City Council authorized a grace period through August 24. Payments made by that date will avoid a late fee. Property owners may pay their taxes by mail or in person at City Hall, 630 Avenue C, or at Bayonne branches of Bayonne Community Bank (BCB).
By state law, quarterly payments received after the close of business on Wednesday, August 24, will incur interest charges dating back to Monday, August 1, the nominal, legal due date for the third quarter. For anyone making payment in person on August 24, the Tax Collector’s Office strongly recommends paying at City Hall.
In the recent past, taxpayers received third and fourth quarter tax bills in the same mailing. In 2011, the fourth quarter billing will come in a separate mailing in the autumn, because the City of Bayonne is transitioning from a fiscal year to a calendar year. A fiscal year runs from July 1 to the following June 30. A calendar year runs from January 1 to December 31. Currently, the City of Bayonne is in a six-month transition period to the new calendar year system.
